The relationship between characteristics of caregivers and adults with intellectual disability, and social support, family function, rehabilitation needs in caregivers

Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between characteristics of caregivers and adults with intellectual disability, and social support, family function, and rehabilitation needs in caregivers.

Methods : 98 pairs of adults with intellectual disability and caregivers participated in this study. The researchers examined the general characteristics of adults with intellectual disability and caregivers. The evaluation included the level of activities of daily living, the ability to communicate, the health status of the adults with intellectual disability, and the family income, the health status, the utility and the need for rehabilitation, the social support (multidimensional scaled perceived social support, MSPSS), family function (adaptation, partnership, growth, affection, resolve, APGAR index) of caregivers were measured. The collected data were analyzed to relationship the characteristics of people with intellectual disability, and social support, family function, rehabilitation needs of caregivers using regression and correlation analysis.

Results : Rehabilitation needs were significantly correlated with age of people with intellectual disability (p<.01), and subjective health status of caregivers (p<.05). Education level of caregivers affected social support significantly (R2=.058, p=.021). Communication ability of people with intellectual disability affected family function (R2=.071, p=.01). Social support of caregivers had a significant influence on family function (R2=.488, p<.001).

Conclusion : These findings suggest that the barriers to system of community rehabilitation should be lowered, and the authors discussed the results of present investigation.
